Ed Weinberg

Retired U.S. Army Medical Service Corps Officer; now President and CEO of Community Care Services, Optum Serve

Text

Ed Weinberg served 23 years as a Medical Service Corps Officer in the United States Army. He is a combat disabled Veteran and a recipient of the Purple Heart. He holds a master's degree in health care administration from Baylor University. Weinberg is a RAND Arroyo Center Fellow and has been a fellow with the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) since 2005.

Weinberg married his wife in Texas and was shortly after placed on his first assignment in Italy. He served six years as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division. A few years later, his first daughter was born. The first song she learned to sing was "All-American Soldier," the 82nd Airborne Division song. She will soon wear the Weinberg nametag, as she is a senior Army ROTC cadet commissioning this May from the University of Tampa. Weinberg's second daughter was born while he was at Baylor University, and is currently a senior in high school with plans on attending college after graduation. His third and youngest daughter was born at Fort Belvoir in Virginia and is quite the accomplished dancer – his family has supported and grown alongside his various accomplishments of his Army career.

Weinberg credits his foundation of leadership to his time in the Army. Three specific roles had a strong impact on his ability to manage several aspects of business. He learned how to effectively manage teams while serving as an organizational development facilitator, improving senior leadership team dynamics. He spent two years serving as a legislative liaison between the Pentagon and Capitol Hill, where he learned how to achieve results efficiently and navigate the political landscape. And lastly, he served as the director of communications for the U.S. Army Medical Department, where he learned the importance of clear communication, both internally and externally. The lessons and skills Weinberg learned from these three influential roles, and many other Military experiences, are put to use every day at Optum Serve.

Through the several positions that Weinberg held throughout his military career, he learned the importance of never burning a bridge. He states that in the U.S. Army, he frequently worked with people above and below him in ranking. With people continually changing rank, a person who used to serve below you could end up serving above you, and vice versa. This taught Weinberg to treat people with respect and dignity regardless of their title.

As a Veteran himself, Weinberg has firsthand knowledge of the dedication and sacrifices it takes in order to serve our country. Just three years ago, Weinberg was enrolled in the U.S. Army. Now, when interacting with other Veterans, he is not just a businessman — he is one of them. Having been through similar experiences as other Veterans, he is able to better connect with those we serve.

Weinberg joined Optum Serve in 2017 and is now the president and CEO of the Community Care Services division of Optum Serve. His team helps provide medical, dental, pharmacy, complementary and integrative health services to Veterans across 36 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. At Optum Serve, Weinberg utilizes his influential leadership and skills learned from his time in the U.S. Army, and is committed to serving the men and women who have served our great nation.
